Bromodichloromethane, a trihalomethane that produces neoplasms in rodents.

چکیده
Bromodichloromethane, a trihalomethane found in water supplies after chlorination, was administered by gavage in corn oil to male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice for up to 2 years at dose levels of 0, 50, or 100 mg/kg to rats, 0, 25, or 50 mg/kg to male mice, and 0, 75, or 150 mg/kg to female mice. Survival at 2 years in rats and in male mice was comparable among groups and was greater than 50% at the termination of the experiment. Survival in female mice was greater than 50% in all groups until week 84 but was reduced toward the end of the study because of ovarian abscesses in some female mice. There was clear evidence of carcinogenicity in males and females of both species as shown by increased incidences of tubular cell adenomas and adenocarcinomas in the kidney and adenocarcinomas and adenomatous polyps in the large intestine in male and female rats, increased incidences of tubular cell adenomas and adenocarcinomas in the kidney of male mice, and increased incidences of hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas in female mice. Of the three trihalomethanes studied to date in the National Cancer Institute/National Toxicology Program (chloroform, chlorodibromomethane, or bromodichloromethane) bromodichloromethane caused the widest spectrum of neoplasms in rodents.

Trihalomethanes in drinking water and spontaneous abortion.
Trihalomethanes (chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and chlorodibromomethane) are common contaminants of chlorinated drinking water. Although animal data indicate that these compounds may be reproductive toxicants, little information exists on their relation to spontaneous abortion in humans. We examined exposure to trihalomethanes and spontaneous abortion in a prospective study of 5,...
متن کاملMultipathway risk assessment of trihalomethane exposure in drinking water of Lebanon.
The toxicological risks and lifetime cancer risks of trihalomethanes through oral ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation exposure from tap water in selected regions in Lebanon are estimated. Existing trihalomethane concentrations do not pose any non-carcinogenic and developmental risks in the exposed population via oral ingestion. Among the three pathways, residents have a higher risk of ...
متن کاملRelation between trihalomethane compounds and birth defects.
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the risk of birth defects relative to exposure to specific trihalomethanes in public water supplies. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was conducted based on data from a population based perinatal database in Nova Scotia, Canada and from the results of routine water monitoring tests. The cohort consisted of women who had a singleton birth in Nova Scotia between 1988 ...
متن کاملThe effect of disinfection by-products and mutagenic activity on birth weight and gestational duration.
Epidemiologic studies of disinfection by-products have traditionally focused on total trihalomethane (TTHM) concentration as a surrogate for maternal exposure during pregnancy. We used birth certificate data on 196,000 infants to examine the effect of third-trimester exposures on various indices of fetal development. We examined the effect of town-average concentrations of TTHM and additional e...
متن کاملAmmonia-oxidizing bacteria in biofilters removing trihalomethanes are related to Nitrosomonas oligotropha.
Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in nitrifying biofilters degrading four regulated trihalomethanes-trichloromethane, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and tribromomethane-were related to Nitrosomonas oligotropha. N. oligotropha is associated with chloraminated drinking water systems, and its presence in the biofilters might indicate that trihalomethane tolerance is another reason that...
